Aflas O-rings and Gaskets

As a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and propylene (P), TFE/P provides a unique combination of chemical, heat, and electrical resistance. Chemically, TFE/P resists both acids and bases, as well as steam, amine-based corrosion inhibitors, hydraulic fluids, alcohol, and petroleum fluids. TFE/P is also resistant to ozone and weather. TFE/P typically retains its remarkable chemical resistance even in high temperatures (up to 450° F / 232° C), and tests have shown that electrical resistance actually improves with heat exposure.

The first TFE/P compound to be commercially marketed was Aflas. In a sense, Aflas defined the initial boundaries for base-resistant materials. There are varying grades of Aflas, each with their own molecular weight. Most molded and extruded products are made from Aflas 150P, which has a molecular weight of about 130,000. In comparison, Aflas 100H has a molecular weight of 200,000 and is typically used where high pressures are to be sealed, such as in oil field applications. TFE/P compounds are also widely used in the chemical processing, automotive, and aerospace industries.

Explosive Decompression

Explosive Decompression(ED) or Rapid Gas Decompression(RGD) is a structural failure, a condition that occurs due to gas permeation or dissolution into the seal material. When system pressure decays quickly, the entrapped gas expands, rupturing the o-ring.

Explosive decompression may cause blistering, internal cracking and splitting of parts. Seal & Design has compounds available in EPDM, HNBR, Viton, Aflas, and Chemraz to minimize the effect of explosive decompression.  Please contact our sales staff for a proper elastomer recommendation.

Durlon 9000® gasket material

DURLON® 9000/9000N is used extensively in chemical, pulp and paper, food and beverage and the railroad tankcar industries.It has been tested and approved for liquid chlorine, caustics, liquid oxygen, and high purity applications in the pharmaceutical industry (9000N, blood components manufacturing).DURLON® 9000 and 9000N are designed for applications where resistance to highly aggressive chemicals is required. Available in unpigmented white as style 9000N. Both styles 9000 and 9000N, (including branding) conform to FDA requirements.

DURLON® 9000 has been proven through the “Test Protocol” of the Chlorine Institute and is listed as an acceptable gasket material for Dry Chlorine service (both liquid and gaseous) in Pamphlet 95, Edition 3 of the Chlorine Institute. Additionally, DURLON® 9000 was independently tested and approved for Caustics service by a major chemical/chlorine manufacturer. Unlike generic glass fiber filled PTFE, the shape of the fillers used in DURLON® 9000 do not allow wicking which can cause corrosion on flange faces.
